Cautious spending during Valentine’s Day Consumers are strongly advised not to be carried away in the hyped sales being promoted for Valentine’s Day this weekend. As the Council strengthens its market surveillance for Valentine’s Day specials, consumers are advised to make wise choices. The Council is conducting random checks on shops as thousands are shopping for their loved ones.

Unfortunately such events are opportunities for traders to maximize profits at the consumers’ expense when consumers let their guards off in a festive environment. The Council advises consumers to properly read and understand sales advertisements, product information and promotions that are being presented to them during sales. Consumers should ask questions to understand the product better and to ensure its value for money.

It is important to demand for receipts for the purchase made in case the good is faulty or defective and you may wish to return it later. Do not accept warranty which is given verbally. Ask for a written warranty. Consumers must exercise this responsibility and ensure they get a fair deal. Consumers must not be driven by the commercial hype of Valentine’s Day promotions which leads to unnecessary and unwanted buying.

Instead consumers should think independently of any commercial influence and make their shopping decisions on what they can really afford to give rather than the advertisements trying to convince you into buying something which will put pressure on your budget.

Valentine’s Day is a one-off yearly event while paying for food, utility bills and rent are regular affairs one is responsible for. Consumers are advised to keep their spending within their limits. Traders are urged to exercise ethical trading practices devoid of misleading advertisement, pressure selling, bait advertisement etc to make this year’s Valentine’s Day a special one for all their customers.
